Fair housing is not just a legal obligation but a moral imperative that lies at the heart of the real estate profession. As stewards of housing opportunities, REALTORS® continue to play a crucial role in upholding these practices, ensuring equal access to housing for all individuals, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, or any other protected class.

The National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) has long been a champion of fair housing. Dating back to the Civil Rights Movement in America, NAR has played a key role in advocating for policies that promote inclusive and equitable housing practices across the United States. The Fair Housing Act of 1968, a piece of landmark civil rights legislation, marked a pivotal moment in the fight against housing discrimination. This law codified protections against prohibitive and discriminatory practices that denied individuals equal access to housing opportunities.

Today, the REALTOR® commitment to fair housing remains as robust as ever. REALTORS® undergo rigorous training and education on fair housing laws and practices to ensure they uphold the highest ethical standards in their interactions with clients, colleagues, and the community at large.

Beyond mere compliance, REALTORS® embrace equal rights as a core value. When asked about her thoughts on Fair Housing, SCCAR President Jenell Steltz said, “as REALTORS®, we want to promote a strong and resilient real estate industry. Part of that vision involves creating a market environment that is fair and accessible to everyone.”

The cornerstone of fair housing is the principle of nondiscrimination. REALTORS® pledge to treat all clients fairly and equally, without regard to any protected characteristic. This commitment extends to every phase of the real estate transaction process, from listing and marketing properties to negotiating offers and facilitating closings.

Furthermore, REALTORS® actively engage in community outreach and education initiatives to raise awareness about fair housing rights and responsibilities. They collaborate with local governments, advocacy groups, and industry stakeholders to promote policies and practices that advance fair housing goals. At SCCAR, the association sends out weekly emails throughout the month of April, distributing resources and promoting Fair Housing education and practices.

Decades after the Fair Housing Act of 1968, REALTORS® have continued to champion fair housing practices. Fair housing is not just a set of regulations, it is a fundamental principle that defines the ethical compass of the real estate profession. Sixty-seven years later, REALTORS® still serve as ambassadors of fair housing, advocating equal opportunity and nondiscrimination in housing for all individuals. By upholding these values, REALTORS® not only uphold the law but also uphold the dignity and rights of every individual seeking a place to live, thrive, and belong in our communities. Adhering to these principles, REALTORS® will continue working to help foster a housing market that is free from prejudice and bias, where every individual has an equal opportunity to achieve the American dream of homeownership.
